What is Passive Fire Protection?
Passive Fire Protection is the group of devices, such as fire-resistant doors, floors and walls, that slow down or impede the spread of smoke and fire.
How does Passive Fire Protection work?
Passive fire protection is always at work, and can save lives, assets and your building itself should there be a fire. Systems are put in place to ensure that structures remain intact, buildings are compartmentalised in order to manage fire should it break out, and fireproof materials are used to reduce the impact of fire.
What are some examples of passive fire protection services?
An example of passive fire protection service is compartmentalising a building to allow for people inside to escape in the event of a fire. Other examples include installing fire doors, and using intumescent paint on structural beams in a building.
What is the difference between passive and active fire protection?
Passive and active fire protection work together to ensure that a building is covered against as much fire damage as possible. Active fire protection are those actions taken and those devices installed in order to put out a fire. An example of this is a water sprinkler system. Passive fire protection are those methods used to help prevent a fire from spreading or resist the initial ignition. An example of this is installing fire doors.

Is fire safety required by law?
The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 (the 2005 Act) states that employers must ‘ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the safety, health and welfare at work of his or her employees’.
Section 8 of this act requires employers to obtain, where necessary, the services of a competent person. A competent person is defined as someone who possesses ‘sufficient training, experience and knowledge having regard to the task and the size or hazards (or both) of the undertaking.’
